Teddy Bear History
The teddy bear was invented by Margarete Steiff, a German woman with polio. She had to use a wheelchair after getting polio when she was a little girl. She had an innovative and creative mind. She worked as a seamstress sewing clothes, She began making pin cushions shaped like animals while working as a seamstress. The little animals became very popular, and she started making more and more toys whick included the bear.


Interesting Facts...
The world's first Teddy Bear Museum was set up in Petersfield, Hampshire, England, in 1984. In 1990 a similar foundation was set up in Naples, Florida, USA.

A Teddy Bear Legend...
Theodore Roosevelt, whose nickname was "Teddy", enjoyed big game-hunting. It is said that the teddy bear was born at Hotel Colorado in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. To cheer Theodore Roosevelt after an unsuccessful day of hunting, maids at the hotel presented him with a stuffed bear pieced together with scraps of material. Later, when he did bag a bear, his daughter Alice admired it saying, "I will call it Teddy." The term caught on. There are other legends about he birth of the teddy bear.

National American Teddy Bear Day was inaugurated by The Vermont Teddy Bear Company in 2000 to honor the contribution the Teddy Bear has made to popular culture and to celebrate the official birthday of the first American Teddy Bear born in 1902. It is celebrated on November 13.
October 11 is "National Bring Your Teddy Bear to Work Day"
